Hide Facebook Adverts
March 15, 2009
This may be old hat to everyone but I felt like rolling my own Greasemonkey script to hide ads on Facebook. I’ll keep it updated for the forseeable future so subscribe to the feed for this post if you want to know about improvements.
To install it you’ll need to use Greasemonkey for Firefox, Greasekit for Safari, or some other Greasemonkey compatible plugin for your browser of choice. Once you have those installed properly just click the link below to install the script.
FacebookNoAd.user.js (v0.2)
That’s it! From here on out you should just see a big white space where the adverts used to be. If you do spot adverts send me the page URL and I’ll update the script to blank them out.
Tech details for the curious…
All the script does is change the css of advertisement blocks to “display: none;”. This means as far as Facebook knows you still saw the advert so it shouldn’t harm their business… assuming you wouldn’t have clicked on any of the ads anyway. A safe assumption for me, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve clicked a banner ad.

- v0.1 – initial release
- v0.2 - Updated to cover “www.new.facebook.com” which was coming up for me sometimes. Switched to “visibility: hidden” instead of “display: none” to make sure the non-visible images are downloaded.
